Volrath's Stronghold (Original Art)
Volrath’s Stronghold is a Legendary Land from Stronghold (1998), that can tap for one colorless mana or put a creature card from your graveyard on top of your library by paying (1)(B) and tapping it. It’s one of the earliest examples of a utility land that provides repeatable card advantage – a design space later echoed in cards like Academy Ruins (for artifacts), and Hall of Heliod’s Generosity (for enchantments). Volrath’s Stronghold is a masterpiece of grindy resource recursion, it trades tempo for inevitability and embodies black’s themes of death and recursion without card draw. It’s a form of graveyard recursion because it lets you recycle threats and value creatures indefinitely. Being a land means it’s hard to interact with, which makes it a very resilient card. It also has a great synergy with tutor effects (e.g. Survival of the Fittest, Entomb, or Buried Alive) for constant value. Volrath’s Stronghold is legal in Legacy, Vintage, Commander (EDH), and Premodern. It was used in Legacy Midrange and Control lists as a one-of utility land in decks such as The Rock, Nic Fit, and 4c Loam (2000’s-2010’s). In these decks it functioned as a late-game recursion engine to recover cards like Eternal Witness and Knight of the Reliquary, while also having great synergy with Life from the Loam. In Commander (EDH), it’s one of the most beloved recursion engines in mono-black, Golgari, and multi-color control decks. In these decks its often paired with various creature-based value engines (e.g. Grave Titan, Eternal Witness, Fierce Empath). It allows for inevitable card advantage in longer games and also works perfectly with sacrifice outlets (e.g. Birthing Pod, Phyrexian Altar). Volrath’s Stronghold is also a core land in many different Premodern black-green based attrition decks (e.g. Rb Goblins, Survival, The Rock, BW Control, Mono Black Control). Volrath’s Stronghold is on the Reserved List, it will never be reprinted.
