Underground River (Original Art)

Underground River is part of the original “Ice Age pain land” cycle – lands that tap for colorless mana safely, or for one of two allied colors at the cost of 1 life. This design was revolutionary in 1995 because it offered fast, untapped dual-color access, crucial for tempo and control decks. The life payment felt like a real, balanced drawback – helping define the concept of risk versus tempo advantage. Flavor-wise, the card evokes the treacherous and secret passageways beneath Dominaria’s frozen wastes, a place where knowledge (blue) and ambition (black) intersect. Underground River is all about speed and reliability – it enters untapped, fixes both colors perfectly in Dimir (blue/black) decks, and is great in the early turns where the life loss is minimal compared to the tempo gained. It has been part of several winning mana bases across decades of competitive play. During Ice Age-Mirage Standard (1996-1998), decks like UB Control and Esper (“White-Blue-Black”) often relied on Underground River alongside Adarkar Wastes and Caves of Koilos for mana fixing before fetch lands existed. The Dominaria United reprint reintroduced pain lands to Standard, where Underground River again saw play in various Dimir Control and Esper Legends decks. This card is not on the Reserved List.
