Tsunami is a 4-mana green sorcery first printed in Alpha (1993) that destroys all Islands in play. It’s one of the earliest examples of color hate design. Green decks traditionally struggle with counterspells and card draw, Tsunami evens the playing field by nuking blue’s mana base. In environments where blue dominates it becomes an all-star. Tsunami was a powerful sideboard card during Magic’s early years. It appeared in competitive Mono-Green and Erhnamgeddon decks as a countermeasure to dominant Blue Control lists, particularly Brian Weissman’s “The Deck”. In Old School (93/94), it is a sideboard staple in various decks (e.g. Mono-Green Aggro, G/W Erhnamgeddon) to punish blue decks, especially control and tempo archetypes that rely heavily on Islands. After the opponent taps out or overextends, Tsunami can wipe out their mana base entirely. This will often be game-ending, since Old School control decks depend on Islands to hold up counterspells or develop their board presence. Tsunami is not on the Reserved List and has several reprints.
