Tolarian Academy (Original Sketch)
Tolarian Academy is one of the most explosive mana-production lands ever, and was printed in Urza’s Saga (1998). It’s often compared to Gaea’s Cradle and Serra’s Sanctum, but Academy is the most infamous because artifacts are the easiest permanent type to deploy rapidly – and artifacts often generate more mana themselves. It’s one of the most powerful combo engines in Magic’s history, and the centerpiece of entire archetypes. This card is banned in Legacy, Modern, Pioneer, and restricted in Vintage. Tolarian Academy became truly notorious during Extended (1998-1999), also referred to as the “Combo Winter”. Pro Tour Rome 1998 was dominated by “Tolarian Academy Combo” and “Academy Blue”. Tommi Hovi’s winning “Academy” deck – a powerful blue-based combo deck featured cards like Tolarian Academy, Time Spiral, Windfall, Mind Over Matter, and a huge suite of fast artifacts. This is where Academy earned its reputation as the most broken land ever printed, causing it to be emergency banned. Vintage is the only sanctioned format where you can legally play Academy today. It appears in decks like Paradoxical Outcome Storm, (Golos) MUD, Gifts Control, Vault/Key combo (Tezzerator). Artifact mana (Moxen, Mana Vault, Sol Ring) turns Academy into a supercharged land, enabling explosive mana generation and fast combos. Tolarian Academy is on the Reserved List, it will never be reprinted.
