skullcage
Skullcage (Original Sketch)

Skullcage is a four-mana artifact from Fifth Dawn (2004), that deals 2 damage to the opponent in their upkeep – unless they have exactly three or four cards in hand. It’s a “punisher artifact”, designed to reward careful manipulation of opponent’s hand sizes. Unlike cards like The Rack (which triggers on 2 or less cards), Skullcage is more conditional, requiring the opponent to have exactly 3 or 4 cards. Its damage is fixed at 2, providing consistent but narrow attrition. The “cage” metaphor represents control and restraint. It encourages players to think strategically about manipulating opponent’s draws and discards. This card is best used in multiplayer EDH or casual formats, where more opponents increase the chance of triggering the effect. It sees casual play with commanders that manipulate opponent hands. In discard decks and hand-size manipulation decks (e.g. Tinybones, Trinket Thief and Tergrid, God of Fright), Wheel / Chaos decks (e.g. Xyris, the Writhing Storm and Nekusar, the Mindrazer), and in Group-slug / punisher decks (e.g. Kambal, Consul of Allocation and Rakdos, Lord of Riots). In EDH, 2 damage per opponent per upkeep is surprisingly impactful over multiple turns. Skullcage is not on the Reserved List, it can be reprinted at any time.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0721/8000/6957/files/Skullcage_Original_Sketch_front_a_white.jpg?v=1775127126
