Shivan Dragon is one of those cards every Magic player recognizes- a flying, fire- breathing 5/5 creature iconic for red’s aggressive fantasy. First printed in Alpha (1993), it was a classic example of a big finisher that has captured imaginations for over 30 years. As a flying creature, it was tough to block, especially in early Magic when small creatures dominated. With its pump ability for just a single red mana (+1/+0 until end of turn), Shivan Dragon has reach for combat or direct damage- especially useful when removing a blocker isn’t possible. It was a very powerful card, although its high mana cost and vulnerability to removal limited its performance. In Old School (93/94), it’s a staple in many Mono-Red Aggro or Red midrange decks, often serving as the top-end finisher. Shivan Dragon sees occasional play in Commander decks, particularly in dragon-themed decks or mono-red tribal builds. Shivan Dragon is not on the Reserved List and has been reprinted many times.
