Sentinel is a four-mana 1/* Artifact Creature – Shapeshifter from Legends (1994), that can change its base toughness to 1 plus the power of target creature blocking or blocked by Sentinel for (0). (e.g. If it blocks a 3/3, you can activate it to make it a 1/4, surviving combat). It’s one of Magic’s earliest examples of a reactive combat creature. At a time when most creatures were static – Sentinel introduced a dynamic mechanic that changed its toughness in combat based on the opposing creature’s power. It’s an early example of a reactive, situationally adaptive creature, something that would later become a hallmark of Magic’s design in cards like Morphling or Chameleon Colossus.
It’s a strange, old-school design that rewards clever timing and bluffing more than raw efficiency. It was never meant to be a strong card, but it captures that era where creatures were weird, mechanics were unpredictable, and card text felt like a puzzle. Sentinel is not on the Reserved List.
