Sage of Hours (Original Sketch)
Sage of Hours is a two-mana blue 1/1 Human Wizard creature from Journey into Nyx (2014), that has the heroic ability (whenever you cast a spell that targets it, it gets a +1/+1 counter). You can remove all +1/+1 counters from Sage of Hours, and for every five counters removed, you take an extra turn. Sage of Hours is primarily a combo piece. While it never broke into competitive formats, it became a known card in Commander (EDH) due to its ability to generate infinite turns. It’s a combo finisher in blue or Simic decks that can repeatedly target it or produce huge numbers of counters. It synergizes with spellslinger strategies (Heroic), and because it only costs 2 mana it’s easy to include. Sage of Hours is played with commanders that can go infinite or near-infinite turns with Sage, like Ezuri, Claw of Progress (put 5+ counters each turn, take infinite turns), Vorel of the Hull Clade (doubles counters, easy to hit 5 repeatedly), Animar, Soul of Elements (counter growth + protection), and The First Sliver (Heroic Cascade builds). For example – Ezuri, Claw of Progress + Sage of Hours combo: you play Sage, get Ezuri experience counters to 5+, at the beginning of combat on your turn put X +1/+1 counters on Sage, remove 5 counters and take another turn – repeating this for infinite turns. Sage of Hours is not on the Reserved List.
