Painted as a repaint in watercolors by alpha dual land artist…Drew Tucker, Repentant Blacksmith is a white 1/2 creature with protection from red printed in the Arabian Nights set (1993). It represents how early Magic experimented with flavorful mechanics and unusual color identities. This creature was one of the first “protection” creatures in Magic’s history, teaching players about color-based immunity. In 1993-1994 Magic, red decks were among the strongest archetypes, thus having a 2-drop that could ignore all of its removal was huge (e.g. Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning, Fireball). It occasionally appeared in White Weenie and Mono-White Control decks as part of a strong anti-red package. Like many Arabian Nights cards, it tells a story through flavor and art more than raw power. Repentant Blacksmith is not on the Reserved List, it was reprinted in the Chronicles set.
