Red Elemental Blast (“REB”) is a one-mana red instant, originally printed in Alpha (1993). It is one of the most elegant hate cards ever printed specifically designed to help combat blue’s dominance. For just one mana, you can counter or destroy a key blue card from your opponent’s. It’s played in Legacy, Vintage, Pauper and Old School decks; almost always as a sideboard card against counterspells, card draw, and blue creatures or other permanents. In Legacy, REB is a true sideboard staple primarily used to counteract blue decks. Here it sees play in various tempo, control, and even combo decks (e.g. UR Delver, Jeskai Control, Moon Stompy, Painter). In Vintage, it’s one of the few one-mana answers to the blue-heavy metagame. Because Vintage decks are over 60% blue, REB is practically never a dead card and has great utility out of the sideboard. For Pauper, its also a must have sideboard card in many red decks to combat against various blue decks (e.g. Mono Blue Aggro, Dimir Control, High Tide). In Old School (93/94), REB is an essential piece of every red player’s sideboard to keep blue mages honest. Red Elemental Blast is not on the Reserved List and has been reprinted many times.
