Personal Incarnation, first printed in Alpha (1993), is a big 6/6 white Avatar creature that lets you prevent its death by redirecting damage to yourself. Its controller may activate his ability for free, so the next 1 damage that would be dealt to Personal Incarnation that turn is dealt to its owner instead. When this creature dies, its owner loses half their life, rounded up. This unique and rather clunky ability represents early experimentation with complex life-total mechanics. As one of the first “Avatar” style creatures in Magic history, many old-school players remember it fondly as a nostalgic card, linking your own life and the Avatar’s. When Magic became competitive in the mid-90’s, Personal Incarnation was already considered underpowered and risky compared to other big finishers like Serra Angel. These days, it’s more of a collector’s piece that can be seen in some casual retro cubes or Old School (93/94) fun decks. Personal Incarnation is not on the Reserved List.
