It can tap for one colorless mana or can be turned into a 2\/2 creature with all creature types until end of turn. It’s simple, powerful, and has seen success across multiple formats and archetypes for over a decade. Because it’s colorless it fits into many different decks, while also having tribal synergy since it has all creature types (e.g. Merfolk, Faeries, Elves, Humans,..). \u003cem\u003eMutavault\u003c\/em\u003e is played so much because it’s both a land and a creature slot into one card. During the \u003cem\u003eLorwyn-Alara\u003c\/em\u003e Standard and \u003cem\u003eM14\u003c\/em\u003e Standard, \u003cem\u003eMutavault\u003c\/em\u003e was a staple in aggressive and tribal decks (e.g. Faeries, Mono-Black Devotion, White Weenie, Merfolk). It served as both a creature and a source of reach after a potential board wipe (e.g. \u003cem\u003eWrath of God\u003c\/em\u003e or \u003cem\u003eSupreme Verdict\u003c\/em\u003e). In Modern it’s still a format staple in creature-based and tribal decks such as Merfolk, Humans, Mono-Red Aggro and Eldrazi Tron\/aggro decks. In legacy it has mostly seen play in Merfolk decks and to a lesser extent Slivers and Faeries lists. Although these decks have fallen out of favor in the current legacy metagame.
