Mox Ruby is one of the most powerful and recognizable cards ever printed, and a cornerstone of Magic’s early identity. It’s only printed in Alpha, Beta, and Unlimited (1993). Mox Ruby is one of the legendary Power Nine cards (alongside Black Lotus, the other four Moxen, Ancestral Recall, Time Walk and Timetwister). For many players, owning or playing a Mox Ruby feels like holding a piece of Magic’s origin story. Free mana is the most dangerous thing in Magic design, and Mox Ruby gives you perfect red acceleration for no cost. Playing with this card gives a tempo advantage, as it lets you cast impactful cards earlier than you’re supposed to. It smooths mana bases and enables fast starts even in color-heavy decks. It is restricted in Vintage and Old School and banned in every other sanctioned format. In Vintage, it’s an auto inclusion in every red based deck and many other decks that want to use as much fast mana acceleration as possible (e.g. Jeskai Control, Shops, Paradoxical Outcome Storm). In Old School (93/94), Mox Ruby is one of the most desired cards for Red Deck Wins, Mono-Red Burn, or Atog Aggro lists. It’s also featured in “The Deck” as a universal mana rock. Mox Ruby is on the Reserved List it will never be reprinted.
