Mox Diamond is one of the most iconic pieces of acceleration in Magic’s history besides the original Moxes. It’s a zero-mana artifact, first printed in Stronghold (1998). It turns an extra land in your hand into immediate mana of any color, which can be incredibly powerful in the right decks. Essentially, Mox Diamond is at its best in decks that turn land discard into value, or where mana acceleration matters more than card advantage. It allows for some explosive starts and enables perfect mana fixing. While it doesn’t technically ramp you (since you lose a land card), the tempo and flexibility it provides often decides games. Mox Diamond is a core card in many of Legacy’s unique decks. Perhaps the most famous home for Mox Diamond is the Lands deck in the legacy format. It helps accelerate into Life from the Loam, Exploration, Crop Rotation, and Dark Depths while also fixing mana perfectly. Discarding a land isn’t really a downside, since it can fuel Loam recursion and you can get the lands back at a later time when needed. Recently, Hatchery Pox decks have been making a comeback, due to the printing of Eumidian Hatchery. These decks can take extreme advantage of Mox Diamond’s early acceleration, casting spells like Thoughtseize, Smallpox and Life from the Loam to recoup the card disadvantage. Other important decks featuring Mox Diamond such as Dark Depths and Aggro Loam/4C Loam also benefit greatly from this fast acceleration. Mox Diamond is restricted in Vintage, where it doesn’t really see play because the Power Nine Moxes are stronger options. In cEDH/Commander decks, Mox Diamond is one of the best mana rocks ever printed, especially in land-heavy decks. Mox Diamond is on the Reserved List; it will never be reprinted.
