Mox Amber (Original Sketch)
Mox Amber is a 0-cost Legendary artifact first printed in Dominaria (2018), that adds one mana of any color among legendary creatures and planeswalkers you control. It was designed as a “balanced Mox” – powerful but conditional. The goal was to provide a Mox for Standard without breaking the format, and to reward playing legendary creatures in a set (Dominaria) defined by them. Mox Amber is unique among Moxen because it’s conditional – but this restriction is much easier to meet then it first appears, especially in formats full of cheap legendary creatures (e.g. Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer, Zurgo Bellstriker and Isamaru, Hound of Konda). The payoff is huge, you get a zero-mana rock that accelerates mana and enables fast starts. Modern is the format where Mox Amber has the biggest impact. It’s currently played in Affinity, Song of Creation and Jeskai Ascendancy decks with cards like Tamiyo, Inquisitive Student and Emry, Lurker of the Loch. You get 0-mana ramp on turn one more consistently than any other deck. Mox Amber is also competitively played in Pioneer in decks like 5c Legends Aggro, playing legendary creatures such as Zack Fair, Rona, Herald of Invasion and Jirina, Dauntless General – and in Boros Cloud Aggro with Cloud, Midgar Mercenary. In Commander / EDH, it’s one of the most used mana rocks. Commanders are always legendary, so Mox Amber is almost always turned on. It’s a 0-cost mana rock, which is extremely rare in EDH. It works well with Storm combo, artifact decks, Paradox Engine, Voltron commanders, and Legendary-matters strategies. It’s a staple in many high-power decks and cEDH lists, especially Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy, Emry, Lurker of the Loch, and Kraum + Tymna. Mox Amber is not on the Reserved List.
