Magic artist Don Hazeltine’s most iconic Magic painting by far, Metalworker is a three-mana artifact creature from the Urza’s Destiny set that has long been a staple in artifact-based combo and ramp decks. Its ability lets you reveal any number of artifact cards from your hand and gain 2 colorless mana per card revealed. In the right deck, this can generate huge amounts of mana early, enabling explosive turns with cards like Karn Liberated, Blightsteel Colossus, or Myr Battlesphere. These are typically mono-brown decks with fast mana (like Ancient Tomb and City of Traitors, Moxes, etc…) that aim to drop massive threats or lock pieces quickly. It became a key component in numerous artifact-based decks across Standard, Extended, and Legacy. It has won the 2000 World Championship in Jon Finkel's (No relation to Ray) hands and became a hallmark of the MUD (Artifact) archetype in Vintage together with Staff of Domination. Metalworker was initially banned from the Legacy format in September 2009, but it was unbanned at the same time, along with Entomb and Dream Halls. While it’s fallen out of competitive Legacy and Vintage play due to faster, more resilient combo/prison decks, it remains a high-powered card in Commander/cEDH. Metalworker is on the Reserved List.
