Mahamoti Djinn, first printed in Alpha (1993), is a classic example of a high-cost blue finisher. This was quite rare at the time since blue isn’t known for big creatures. In the early years of Magic, Mahamoti Djinn symbolized blue’s ultimate endgame. Before creatures had efficient mana-to-power ratios or keyword synergies, a 5/6 flier for six mana was huge. It outclassed nearly everything short of Shivan Dragon or Serra Angel, and dodged important removal spells like Lightning Bolt and Psionic Blast. Brian Weissman’s “The Deck” (1994) used Mahamoti Djinn as its win condition alongside cards such as Counterspell, Swords to Plowshares and Disenchant. This deck became the foundation of many modern control archetypes. You’d slow the game down with counters and removal, then drop Mahamoti Djinn once your opponent’s resources were depleted. By the time Pro Tours began in 1996,
Mahamoti Djinn was already being replaced by newer, faster finishers. In Old School play today, it’s still seen sometimes as a nostalgic inclusion, representing one of the original control win conditions. Mahamoti Djinn is not on the Reserved List, it’s been reprinted multiple times.
