Lotus Petal (Original Art)

Lotus Petal is a 0-cost artifact, first printed in Tempest (1997), that can be tapped and sacrificed to add one mana of any color to your mana pool. It’s one of the most iconic fast-mana artifacts ever printed. Lotus Petal is used to accelerate explosive starts like an early turn Show and Tell, Doomsday, Chalice of the Void, or Emry, Lurker of the Loch. It fixes mana in multicolor combo decks, and enables storm counts (+1 storm count and +1 mana) without mana investment – perfect for Storm and ritual-based combo decks. Playing out Lotus Petal also allows you to keep up mana for cards like Veil of Summer, Spell Pierce or Flusterstorm – protecting key spells in combo decks or winning counter-wars when you are tapped out. In Legacy, Lotus Petal is one of the formats defining fast-mana cards. It’s a cornerstone of Legacy combo decks like Show and Tell Combo (Sneaky Show and Omni-Show), Doomsday, Storm (ANT/TES/BSS), Painter, Oops, All Spells, Karn Forge and Reanimator. Lotus Petal is also played as a mana accelerant in fast aggro (“stompy”) and prison variants such as Eldrazi Aggro, Initiative Stompy, and Dragon Stompy / Mono Red Prison – used to power out early lock pieces like Chalice of the Void (X=1), Archon of Emeria, and Magus of the Moon / Blood Moon. In Vintage, Lotus Petal is restricted (1 copy per deck), and appears in decks like Paradoxical Outcome Storm, Doomsday, Underworld Breach, Gifts Control, Initiative Hatebear, and Oath of Druids – its role is similar to Legacy, but moderated due to restriction. In Commander, it’s a staple in high-power and cEDH decks (e.g. Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy and Tivit, Seller of Secrets), contributing to many different combo lines. Lotus Petal is not on the Reserved List, and has been reprinted multiple times.
