Lotus Field (Original Sketch)
Lotus Field is one of the most interesting and combo-centric lands in modern Magic history, first printed in Core Set 2020 (M20). Lotus Field is a spiritual successor to Lotus Vale from Weatherlight (1997) – a card that shared the same “sacrifice two lands” drawback but had no protection. Wizards of the Coast revisited the concept decades later, fixing its exploitability by giving Lotus Field hexproof, making it harder to destroy or target, while still rewarding clever ramp strategies. It produces three mana of any one color and has a great synergy with untap effects like Hidden Strings. Pioneer is Lotus Field’s signature format, where it’s the centerpiece of one of Pioneer’s defining combo decks: Lotus Field Combo. The gameplan is to get Lotus Field on the battlefield as early as possible (usually turn 3), and copy it with Thespian’s Stage (so you don’t need to sacrifice more lands). You then proceed to untap it multiple times with Hidden Strings or Vizier of Tumbling Sands, to generate massive mana. This is followed up by casting a game-ending spell via Emergent Ultimatum or Mastermind’s Acquisition (like Approach of the Second Sun or Omniscience). Lotus Field Combo appeared in multiple Top 8-16 lists during Pioneer Pro Tour Phyrexia (2023). In the Commander (EDH) format, Lotus Field is also a very popular mana engine, that combos with cards like Amulet of Vigor and Thespian’s Stage. Lotus Field is not on the Reserved List, and has been reprinted in Secret Lair Drop Series and Stellar Sights.
