Johan is one of the earliest legendary creatures in Magic’s history, printed in Legends (1994), the set that introduced the Legend subtype. At the time, the concept of a “commander” or “leader” for an army of creatures was new – and Johan’s design clearly reflects that idea. In lore, Johan was a Boros-esque warrior of Dominaria, a disciplined leader capable of inspiring his troops to fight without pause. In gameplay, he grants vigilance (allowing creatures to attack without tapping) as long as he remains untapped – a flavorful way to show that he’s “commanding from behind the lines.” He is one of the earliest examples of a Naya-colored (Red-Green-White) legend. In Old School (93/94), Johan very occasionally appears as a flavorful inclusion in “Legends-themed” decks – especially those that focus on showcasing the earliest legendary creatures. While he’s expensive at six mana and not particularly efficient for competitive Old School play, he can appear in Casual Naya Midrange builds alongside cards like Birds of Paradise, Sylvan Library, Force of Nature, and Elder Dragon Legends like Palladia-Mors or Vaevictis Asmadi. In Commander (EDH), Johan is played in decks with the “exert” theme (a creature gets an extra effect when it attacks, but it won’t untap during its controller’s next untap step) – playing cards like Champion of Rhonas, Combat Celebrant, Watchful Naga, Glorybringer, and Tah-Crop Elite. This card is on the Reserved List.
