Jester's Mask (Original Art)
Jester’s Mask is a five-mana artifact from Ice Age (1995). Jester's Mask enters the battlefield tapped. For (1), (T), Sacrifice Jester's Mask: Target opponent puts the cards from their hand on top of their library. Search that player's library for that many cards. That player puts those cards into their hand, then shuffles their library. Jester’s Mask was designed as part of Magic’s early exploration of “mind games” and hand manipulation – something that was especially experimental in 1995. It’s the thematic successor to Jester’s Cap, another Ice Age artifact that let you surgically remove threats from your opponent’s deck. Where Jester’s Cap attacked the library, Jester’s Mask attacked the hand, letting you completely reshape your opponent’s options – essentially “programming” what they’d draw next. The flavor is classic 90’s Magic: trickery, jesters, and control through confusion. Mechanically, it symbolized the mask wearer (you) seizing control of your opponent’s mind. It also showcases Ice Age’s fascination with “comes into play tapped” artifacts – an attempt to balance strong effects by delaying their use. It’s a form of hand disruption, letting you choose which cards to give them back. This card is used to dismantle combo decks by removing critical cards and replacing them with weak cards. In Commander (EDH), it often shows up in builds that emphasize mind control, chaos, or trickery. (e.g. Xantcha, Sleeper Agent and Nicol Bolas, the Ravager). Jester’s Mask is on the Reserved List.
