island-sanctuary
Island Sanctuary (Repaint)

Illustrated by beloved Power 9 artist Mark Poole, Island Sanctuary is a 2-mana white enchantment, first printed in Alpha (1993). It’s a classic control tool used to stall combat-based decks and was featured in early defensive white strategies. Instead of drawing a card during your draw step, you may instead skip that draw and until your next turn, only creatures with flying or islandwalk can attack you. It locked out non-flying attackers entirely if you could afford to skip draws. Its unique design made it one of the first “trade-off” control enchantments in Magic, giving up card draw for safety. Island Sanctuary saw consistent play in early Type 1 and Type 2 white-blue control decks. Combined with cards like Howling Mine and Wrath of God, it formed one of the first true control lockouts in Magic history. Since Howling Mine gives you extra draws outside of your draw step, you can skip your normal draw to activate Island Sanctuary, but still get cards from Howling Mine. This card remains a strong example of white’s early identity in board control and tempo denial. Island Sanctuary is on the Reserved List.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0721/8000/6957/files/Island_Sanctuary_Repaint_Alpha_front_a_white.jpg?v=1775127671
