Illustrated by beloved Power 9 artist Mark Poole, Howling Mine was first printed in Alpha (1993) where it was a foundational artifact that reshaped card advantage. At the beginning of each player’s draw step, if Howling Mine is untapped, that player draws an additional card. Howling Mine was part of many early Type 1 and Type 2 control decks. It was commonly paired with cards like Winter Orb, Stasis, and Island Sanctuary to generate a draw advantage lock while opponents couldn’t attack or untap. Howling Mine was one of the key cards in the original Turbo-Stasis decks, which won games by locking out opponents and slowly drawing into a win condition. During Pro Tour Rome 1998, Howling Mine appeared in some Turbo-Stasis sideboards. It has also seen play in Modern Lantern Control and Turbo Fog strategies at various times. Howling Mine remains a hugely popular card in casual and cEDH/Commander decks. Howling Mine is not on the Reserved List and has been reprinted many times.
