Illustrated by Power 9 artist Dan Frazier, Hasran Ogress is a 2-mana black 3/2 creature from the Arabian Nights set (1993), Magic’s first expansion set. It represents one of the earliest examples of black creatures with a unique attack penalty mechanic. It deals 3 damage to you whenever it attacks, unless you pay 2. This makes it a card primarily interesting to players in the Old School format, especially those who build decks with nostalgia or a specific challenge in mind, as its drawback makes it difficult to use in competitive modern play. Next to being legal in Old School (93/94), Hasran Ogress also finds a place in casual Commander and vintage-style cube formats. Though never a competitive staple, it is tied to the formative years of Magic’s evolving creature design. Hasran Ogress is not on the Reserved List, its first reprint was in Chronicles (black-bordered version).
