Originally using a piece of marbled paper to represent the forcefield exerting its forces on the helpless figure below, here the artist implemented a fully painted version of the exact same image to simulate the visual effect of original painting. Forcefield is a 3-mana artifact first printed in Alpha (1993), offering a unique method of damage prevention. For one mana you can prevent almost all damage from an unblocked creature, losing only 1 life instead. Forcefield is representative of early Magic artifact design- small, narrow effects that rewarded good sequencing and board awareness. It has been played in classic Old School control decks like UW and Mono Blue and is still occasionally seen in niche casual or EDH decks as a flavor or utility piece. Its effect remains distinct, rarely replicated in modern Magic. Forcefield is on the Reserved List, it will never be reprinted.
