Illustrated by beloved Power 9 artist Mark Poole, Fastbond is a 1-mana green enchantment first printed in Alpha (1993) and remains one of Magic’s most powerful ramp spells. For just a single green mana it enables multiple land drops per turn, fueling explosive mana acceleration and early-game combos. It’s considered one of Magic’s earliest examples of a “broken” Magic card. It was quickly identified as a degenerate engine for unfair combos and has been banned early in most formats. Its raw efficiency led to its restriction in Vintage and banning in Legacy and Commander. Fastbond was a very dominant card in early Type 1/Vintage play, helping define early combo decks. In the 1990’s “Turbo Land” decks used Fastbond to repeatedly draw, replay lands, and overwhelm opponents. This was made possible because of the combination with cards like Gush, Time Walk, and Yawgmoth’s Will. Vintage “Crucible Fastbond” decks (2000’s-2010’s) used it to lock opponents out with Strip Mine and Wasteland loops. In these decks Fastbond functioned as the central engine card, often paired with Crucible of Worlds, Zuran Orb and Exploration. Fastbond is on the Reserved List, and will be remembered as one of the most iconic and powerful green cards ever printed.
