Enlightened Tutor (Original Art)

Enlightened Tutor is a one-mana white instant from Mirage (1996), that lets you search your library for an artifact or enchantment card and puts the card on top of your library. It’s one of the most efficient and flexible tutors ever printed, despite its card-disadvantage drawback. Since it can be cast at instant speed, it allows you to setup lock pieces, combo engines, or hate cards on the opponent’s end step. This card can tutor silver bullets that can swing the game with a single artifact or enchantment. Enlightened Tutor was part of quarterfinalist Tom van de Logt’s “Replenish” deck at the 2000 World Championship. This deck used cards like Attunement and Frantic Search to put powerful enchantments such Parallax Tide, Parallax Wave and Opalescence into the graveyard – followed up by casting Replenish to put all of the enchantments back into play. Enlightened Tutor has had its greatest competitive impact in Legacy, where it was commonly played to tutor up specific artifacts and enchantments in decks like Enchantress (e.g. Argothian Enchantress, Solitary Confinement), UW Miracles (e.g. Counterbalance, Sensei’s Divining Top), Landstill (e.g. Moat, Humility) and White Stax / Prison (e.g. Trinisphere, Helm of Obedience). Today, it’s mainly played in Rw Painter to tutor up combo or lock pieces (e.g. Grindstone, Painter’s Servant, Ensnaring Bridge, Blood Moon). In Commander (EDH), it’s one of the most played white tutors – especially in enchantment-focused commanders (e.g. Zur the Enchanter and Sythis, Harvest’s Hand), artifact strategies, combo decks, Stax and pillow-fort decks. This card is also played in various Premodern decks such as Landstill, Enchantress, Oath of Druids and Deadguy Ale. Enlightened Tutor is not on the Reserved List.
