Earthquake is a red sorcery originally printed in Alpha (1993) that deals X damage to each creature without flying and each player. It is one of Magic’s earliest scalable sweepers and a defining card for red control strategies.
Earthquake helped establish red as more than an aggressive color—it showed that red could also reset the board and control the game through mass damage. In early Magic, it was a devastating finisher, often clearing the battlefield and ending the game simultaneously. The card remains highly playable today in formats like Commander and Cube, where flexible board wipes are always valuable. Earthquake also continues to see play in Old School Magic, where it is a cornerstone of red-based control decks. Earthquake is not on the reserved list.
