Duress (Original Sketch)
Duress is one of the most efficient and format-defining discard spells in Magic’s history. For just one black mana, it takes any noncreature spell that’s key to your opponent’s strategy. First printed in Urza’s Saga (1998), it has been a mainstay of Standard, Pioneer, Legacy, and Vintage for decades – and serves as both a powerful maindeck option and a reliable sideboard weapon against control and combo strategies. In Standard, Duress has appeared repeatedly, and it’s always played when available. It’s used in decks like Mono-Black Control, Rakdos Midrange, Grixis Control, UB Faeries, and Esper Control. Duress is also a major sideboard card in the Pioneer format, where it’s played in decks such as Rakdos Midrange, Mono Black Control, Mardu Greasefang, and Dimir Control. Duress is often the best tool for interacting with removal, planeswalkers, and combo pieces (e.g. Lotus Field, Bring to Light). In Legacy, Duress is highly relevant in the blue-heavy format. Here it’s mostly used in Storm decks like ANT (Ad Nauseam Tendrils), TES (The Epic Storm), and in Doomsday decks. It helps protect combo turns by stripping Force of Will and other counters. Duress is also incredibly strong in Vintage, because nearly all relevant cards (fast mana, restricted spells, counters) – are noncreature spells, and life totals barely matter. Duress is used in decks like Doomsday, Storm variants (Beseech / Gifts), and Tinker Control decks. In Commander (EDH), Duress is not as powerful in multiplayer, but it’s played in cEDH black decks with combo / discard-focused commanders (e.g. Gwenom, Remorseless and K’rrik, Son of Yawgmoth). Duress is not on the Reserved List.
