Dream Coat (Original Sketch)
Dream Coat is a one-mana blue Enchant Creature (Enchantment-Aura) from Legends (1994). It’s an Aura enchantment with a surprisingly unique ability that lets you change the enchanted creature’s color once per turn for free. This effect can be played at instant speed and lasts until end of turn. At the time of Legends, color-changing effects were a legitimate mechanical theme (e.g. Magical Hack, Sleight of Mind, Thoughtlace), and Dream Coat fits perfectly into that early design philosophy. Changing a creature’s color could interact with: Landwalk, protection abilities, color-hosing spells and combat tricks. Legends flavor drew heavily on mythical illusion magic, enchantresses and mystical transformations, and simple enchantments. This card doesn’t produce card advantage or stats, so its competitive play has always been extremely niche. In Commander (EDH), Dream Coat is mainly used in some casual, Aura- or protection-based decks. It enables color-based protection tricks (e.g. turn your commander red, give it protection from red, now it’s unblockable and immune to red removal). Dream Coat also works in Enchantress shells (e.g. Sythis, Harvest’s Hand, Tuvasa, the Sunlit and Light-Paws, Emperor’s Voice), because it’s a one-mana Aura that cantrips or triggers “draw a card” via Enchantress effects. Dream Coat is not on the Reserved List.
