Compulsion (Original Art)
Compulsion is a two-mana blue enchantment, originally printed in Torment (2002). For (1)(U), Discard a card: Draw a card or (1)(U), Sacrifice Compulsion: Draw a card. It’s an iconic Torment card – from the black-heavy “madness and discard” era of Magic. Thematically, this card is tied to obsession and knowledge, showing a mage literally overwhelmed by the urge to draw and discard. Mechanically, it’s a beautiful design that rewards planning and incremental advantage – a slow, thoughtful way to sculpt your hand over time. As an enchantment-based looting engine, it was one of the first cards to make repeatable looting efficient and safe, giving control decks a steady way to filter through draws while enabling graveyard strategies. Its repeatable card filtering turns every two mana into a new look at your deck. It was perfect for Flashback, Reanimation, Treshold, or Madness decks because of its graveyard synergy. Due to Compulsion’s low casting cost it could enter early and remain a safe, low-priority permanent that avoids removal. Compulsion was heavily played in Odyssey/Torment/Onslaught Standard, especially in Blue-White Control and Psychatog (“Tog”) decks. It provided card filtering, graveyard fuel, and a mana sink for long control mirrors. It was commonly paired with cards like Circular Logic, Counterspell, Psychatog, and Upheaval. The “Upheaval-Psychatog” combo used Compulsion to dig for the right pieces while fueling the graveyard. Compulsion made some major appearances during Pro Tour Osaka 2002 (Odyssey Block Constructed), where it was a staple in several top-performing U/B Psychatog decks. During 2003 Extended Season, Reanimator decks and “Tog” lists still used Compulsion as a flexible draw/filter tool. Compulsion will be remembered fondly as one of the most elegantly designed looting enchantments in Magic’s history. Compulsion is not on the Reserved List, and has been reprinted in Enchanting Tales and Mystery Booster 2.
