Brainstorm (Original Art)
Thought by many to be one of the top 5 cards in the history of Magic, and one of the game's best common cards, Brainstorm was designed during Ice Age (1995) as part of a push to explore “instant-speed cantrips.” It was initially seen as a simple card draw spell, but over time, it became clear that its synergy with shuffle effects (like fetch lands and tutors) made it absurdly powerful. That synergy transformed it into one of the most skill-intensive, format-defining cards in Magic’s history. It’s beloved for how it rewards deep sequencing, bluffing, and deck knowledge, turning what looks like a simple draw spell into a tactical masterpiece. Brainstorm fixes card quality, as you can smooth out your hand early or dig for answers late. It’s shuffle synergy combining it with fetch lands, tutors, cantrips – basically any effect that lets you shuffle your library, effectively turns it into “Draw three cards, then put two you don’t need back – and shuffle them away”. Its an instant, so you can use an “emergency” brainstorm when you need to look for a specific card (e.g. Force of Will), or just want to use your mana efficiently sculpting your hand at the end-step. It’s also important as Brainstorm can hide key cards on top of your library versus discard spells (e.g. Thoughtseize). The saying “the best Brainstorm, is the one you don’t have to cast” holds a lot of value and often makes the difference in skill between many players. Brainstorm defines blue legacy decks – from tempo decks (e.g. UB Delver, UR Cutter) to midrange/control decks (e.g. Jeskai Control, Stoneblade, 4-5c Control) to combo decks (e.g. Doomsday, Sneaky Show, Cephalid Breakfast). Brainstorm is restricted in Vintage, but remains an auto-include in almost every blue control and combo deck. This card is not on the Reserved List.
