Blood of the Martyr (Repaint)
Using the eyes of Magic artist Sandra Everingham as a model, when Christopher Rush painted the original Blood of the Martyr, he had no way of knowing he was creating on of vintage Magic’s most iconic images. The simplicity of the composition and how well it translated when shrunk fit in the window of a card played a huge part in that. Blood of the Martyr is a three-mana white instant from The Dark set that lets you redirect any amount of damage that would be dealt to any number of creatures you control this turn to your life total instead. While it’s not a card you’ll see in competitive formats like Modern, Legacy, or Vintage, it has a small niche in Commander/cEDH. This particularly in decks that play into damage redirection, creature protection, or death triggers. Some white-based Commander decks use it in clever ways. For example, redirecting lethal damage onto a creature like Stuffy Doll or using it to protect key pieces during a board wipe or alpha strike. Blood of the Martyr is not on the Reserved List, but it hasn’t been reprinted in decades. It has printings in The Dark and also in Chronicles.
